N55 vs N54: Parts Differences

The N55 single-turbo replaced the N54 twin-turbo in 2010. While they share some external dimensions, many parts are not interchangeable. The N55 uses a Valvetronic variable valve lift system (the N54 does not), a single mono-scroll turbocharger, and different VANOS solenoids. When ordering parts for your N55, confirm your engine code — not just the model year — to ensure correct fitment. The engine code is on a sticker on the valve cover and the firewall.

N55 Oil Specification

The N55 requires BMW Longlife-01 specification oil: typically 0W-30 or 5W-30 synthetic. BMW LL-01 approval is printed on the oil bottle — do not use oils marked LL-04 (diesel spec) or non-approved viscosities. In Canadian winters, 0W-30 provides better cold-start protection than 5W-30 at temperatures below -20°C. Change interval: 10,000 km or annually, whichever comes first, using a fresh OEM oil filter.
